Magnetic Resonance Imaging, or MRI, is an excellent tool to diagnose numerous health issues. They can range from heart problems to bone deterioration. Gadolinium can cause potentially fatal diseases like nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) or nephrogenic fibrosing dermopathy (NFD). These diseases cause the skin as well as connective tissue to become abnormally thicker which weakens the bone. This makes the bones more susceptible to breaking. Any patient exposed to a contrasting agent that contains gadolinium can contract these diseases but patients with a history of kidney problems are at a higher risk.

Warning from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)

The FDA has investigated reported cases that claim to link health problems with gadolinium. The FDA concluded that patients with kidney issues by no means should undergo an MRI that requires the use of a gadolinium contrasting agent.

Ask the Right Questions
