MRI Consumers Beware
"We need to get an MRI done so we can figure out what is going on." This is a very common phrase that patients hear from an initial appointment from a doctor. Getting a Magnetic Resonance Imaging or MRI is pretty common practice. It is an excellent tool a doctor uses to diagnose several types of injuries including progression of a disease or detecting damaged arteries. The use of the MRI is endless. Some MRI's require a contrasting agent injection. This agent aids in reading an MRI more accurately. But there can be some health risks to getting an MRI. It sounds quite ironic since and an MRI is suppose to help diagnose a health issue not cause one. But it happens.
Some contrasting agents contain gadolinium. Gadolinium is known to cause fatalities. This occurs mostly with patients that have a history of kidney problems, but is not limited to these patients. Gadolinium is known to cause nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) or nephrogenic fibrosing dermopathy (NFD). These are potentially fatal diseases that cause the skin as well as connective tissue to become thicker. This makes the bones more susceptible to breaking. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning specifically to patients with kidney issues to not undergo an MRI that uses a contrasting agent that contains gadolinium. Theses patient are actually at a higher risk of developing NSF.
One would think the health risk of an MRI would be in regard to the contrasting agent as the FDA warns; however, there is another risk to getting an MRI. During an MRI, there is an actual magnetic pull that is created. There was a case of a 6-year old patient that was hit by an oxygen tank that was sucked toward him by the magnetic pull. It hit him in the head causing severe head trauma. The patient died three days later.
